How To Change People Without Offending them Or Arousing Resentment.

Begin with praise and honest appreciation. Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly. Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders. Let the other person save face. Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be “hearty in your approval and lavish in your praise.” Be a good example for the other person to live up to. Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct. Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

6 Ways leaders can change someone's attitude or behavior:

1. Be sincere. Do not promise anything that you cannot deliver. Forget about the benefits to yourself and concentrate on the benefits to the other person.
2. Know exactly what it is you want the other person to do.
3. Be empathetic. Ask yourself what is it the other person really wants.
4. Consider the benefits that person will receive from doing what you suggest.
5. Match those benefits to the other person’s wants.
6. When you make your request, put it in a form that will convey to the other person the idea that he personally will benefit.

Get More Influence: How To Win People To Your Way Of Thinking.

Sometimes disagreements happen. The only way to get the best of a disagreement is to avoid it. Just take your mind outside of it an rise above it. Then show respect for the other person's point of view, never say... "your wrong."

If you discover you were mistaken admit it quickly and emphatically.

Begin in a friendly way, get the other person saying, "yes" "yes" immediately. Let the other person do a great deal of the talking. Let the other person feel the idea is his (or hers). Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.

Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires. Make an appeal to greater motives. Dramatize your ideas, put some feeling in it. Then throw down a challenge.

The online gurus's have it all wrong. Oh yea they may be able to suck lots of folks in, but let's face it not everyone can be a guru so how are they going to help you with success? After all many times, their perceived success came from the look of a guru status online.

It's not about you it's about the people your connecting with. Discover people and what they want. Find out whats of value to them. It must be completely about others. Internally focus on personal development, and how to be emotionally intelligent. Hint: New Marketing is about relationships not the medium.

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

I believe... People with passion can change the world for the better. I'm not necessarily passionate about physical products but what the product can bring to us and to the world. Passion will not protect us against set backs, but it will ensure no failure is ever final. So what is it your passionate about?

Wether you like it or not you are being judged by how well you communicate. Good Artists copy. Great Artists steal. I want you to steal some ideas here OK? Two people can see the same thing but interpret it differently based on their vision. Chances are your vision won't look like mine so your ideas will be different also.

9. It's what you DO that makes a Difference
Most of us are alike in our Dreams. Most of us are alike in the promises we make. What sets us apart and makes each of us different is what we do.

Last week I was visiting with my Mom, she was sharing with me how her railroad retirement (much like Social Security for retired railroad workers and their families) didn't go up this year. According to the letter that she received their was no cost of living increase like they generally get on an annual basis. She said to me, "How can that be look at the price of gas from last year to this year." We had a long talk about the state of the economy today, I shared with her stories I had heard of folks loosing their disability. Folks getting hit with tax bills unexpectedly for small enough amounts it's not worth hiring someone to fight it so they just pay it or have it garnished from their bonus check.

George Washington once said, "Where are the men of abilities why do they not come forth and save this country."

Wether you want to admit it or not our country needs us the small business owner. It's the small business owner that has the ability to pull the country out of the mess we're in. It's what you do that makes a difference.

Teddy Roosevelt once said, "ItÂ’s not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whoÂ’s face is marred by dust, sweat and blood; who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again; who knows great enthusiasm, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly; so his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat."

10. The MOM Factor

At the base of your brain, where all the nerve endings come together to form your spinal cord, there is something about the size of your thumb called the Reticular Formation. This is a real physical, physiological thing. Part of the Reticular Formation is the Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS has one job and one job only. Its job is to filter information; and it is superb at what it does. We are constantly exposed to, and bombarded by so much information, data, stimuli and even opportunities, that if we consciously tried to register it all, process it all and think about it all, we would literally go crazy. We would be in a constant state of "overload". So the RAS (which remember, is VERY good at what it does) constantly filters out "extraneous" and "superfluous" information and data. It's like a "Spam Filter" for your mind.

The crucial question then becomes: How does the RAS determine what it needs to filter out? The RAS is constantly asking three questions in order to decide what you need to know and be aware of:

  • 1. Is it my responsibility?
  • 2. Is it important?
  • 3. Does it match my version of'the truth'?
Whatever information, data or stimuli you are exposed to must satisfy all three questions. It's not the best two out of three. It is not a democracy or majority rules. It must satisfy ALL THREE criteria before the RAS will allow you to be aware of it - that includes any opportunities that you come across. Lets look at the first question the RAS asks to see why you may have blind spots and can't see opportunities that are all around you.

1. "Is it my responsibility"? - Have you ever gone someplace you've never been before, in an unfamiliar part of town, as a passenger in someone else's car? After you got there did you realize that you had absolutely no idea how to find your way home? It has probably happened to most of us. On the other hand, had you driven there yourself, would you have been able to find your way home? More than likely.

Why in the first case were you clueless, but in the second case you noticed the gas station on the corner, the white picket fence, the church steeple and all the other landmarks that would help you find your way out of there? Because, in the second case you knew you were responsible for getting there and back. However, in the first case you knew you weren?t responsible, so your RAS decided you didn't need that information, filtered it out and you never saw the important landmarks that could help you find your way home. The "Mom Factor"

I would like all of you mothers reading this to think back to when your first child was an infant (I'm sure the following was true of all of your children, but think especially of your first child). They were just old enough that they had graduated from the bassinet by your bed to their own crib, in their own room down the hall. The first few weeks do you remember how you would be sound asleep in the middle of the night, and out of a sound sleep, all of the sudden you knew that you had to be down the hall checking on your child. You don't know what you heard; you're not even sure that you had heard anything; you just knew you had to be there, and in a heart beat you are wide awake and at that child's bedside making sure that everything is OK.

It's the third time that night that you have been up to check on your child. As you return to your bed, you decide that it is important for your husband to know that THIS! - IS! - THE! - THIRD! - TIME! that you have been up to check on HIS! child. So, you THROW! yourself on the bed and JERK! the covers back over to you, just to make sure your husband appreciates that this is the THIRD! time you have been up ? and your husband sleeps through the whole thing. He never heard you get up, was never aware that you came back to bed, and never even felt you jerk the covers back over.

Now, in some of your homes, later that night, the family dog starts yapping in the back yard. Dad jumps out of bed, throws open the window, shouts at the dog to shut up, comes back to bed - and Mom sleeps through the whole thing. How is it that Mom can hear a virtually inaudible sleeping baby, but can?t hear barking dogs and Dad can hear dogs, but can't hear babies? It's simple ... in your home the roles have been defined such that Mom is responsible for the baby and Dad is responsible for the dog.

Your RAS will filter out any information that you are not responsible for and make you unaware of it.

I've often heard it said that wisdom comes with age. But, that is not true. The only thing that automatically comes with age - is old. That's all you get. Wisdom comes when you accept responsibility for your life. I know 80-year-olds with no wisdom and 18-year-olds with plenty. The difference is that the 18-year-old has accepted responsibility for their life and future, but the 80-year-old is still blaming everyone and everything around them for their stature in life.

All of us spend the first nine months of our lives on a waterbed. It is warm. It is cozy. All of our needs were met without us having to do a thing. Then we are born, the doctor cut the umbilical cord, slapped us on the rear end and then 95% of us spend the next 50 years of our lives looking around for someone else we can plug our umbilical cord into to take care of us. But, it's not someone else's responsibility. And until you take responsibility for your life and future, your RAS will make you blind to opportunities around you.

Seven Days That Will Last a Lifetime

The following seven-day plan progresses gradually. It begins with two full days of a modified macrobiotic diet, then moves into three days of fruit only, then comes back to a more regular eating plan for the last two. Throughout, we eliminate caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, dairy, and artificial foods altogether. There are no strict guidelines as to how much or when to eat; use basic nutritional principles to determine that for yourself.

Days One and Two:

Your diet for these two days should consist of organic fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and chicken, or fish. Modify these suggestions to accommodate your tastes:

Upon Awakening: One large glass of hot purified water with one half of a fresh lemon squeezed into it. You may add honey to sweeten if you wish. This tonic helps flush waste matter from your digestive tract and keeps your breath sweet.

Breakfast: Fresh fruit and freshly squeezed fruit juice, organic yogurt (if you eat dairy), chopped almonds to sprinkle in the yogurt or over sliced fruit, and as much herbal tea as you want. You can use a little honey for sweetener. Lunch: One serving of protein (tofu, fish, or skinless chicken Breast), steamed, poached or baked with no oil, and one serving of a whole grain (like brown rice, couscous, wild rice). One serving is equivalent to about the size of your fist. You may also have as much fresh vegetables and salad as you would like. You can use vinegar and lemon with one teaspoon olive oil for dressing and natural seasonings as you wish. Make lunch your largest meal. But remember, less is more (you detox better!). Snack: Any form of fresh fruit or vegetable. Dinner: One serving of protein as at lunch and one serving of a whole grain and one serving of a vegetable or a salad. Give yourself some variety from lunch. For dessert, you can either have fresh or baked fruit, or you can get creative and make naturally low-fat, whole grain, dairy-free desserts that you can get from any good vegan cookbook.

Supplements to Use:

Any kind of smoothie with protein in it

Remember, avocados and tomatoes are fruits, so you can use them to make soups, salads, guacamole, and so on. Or you can go to the health food store and buy a can of organic tomato soup (watch sodium count—500 or below). You can add a little tomato salsa or apple cider vinegar for flavoring.

12. 6 Things You Should Know About Probiotics

Gary Huffnagle, author of "The Probiotics Revolution," offers these tips about how probiotics can be useful to you:

1. Traveling: To prevent diarrhea or constipation, take probiotics daily for two weeks before traveling. Though most should be refrigerated, some are fine if left un-refrigerated for about two weeks.

2. Stomach flus, viruses, colds: Any illnesses causing vomiting and diarrhea can be improved with probiotics. They'll cut down on sick time.

3. Food poisoning: Taking probiotics decreases chances of food poisoning.

4. Yeast infections: Probiotics help avoid them. If you get one, they help get rid of it more quickly.

5. Fibromyalgia: It seems this disease really does cause an increase in pain, Huffnagle says. But most people with fibromyalgia also have gastrointestinal problems. Consume more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and other foods that support probiotics and take a form of them daily.

13. Processed food linked to lower kids' IQ's

For my past several Years in Shaklee, when I have presented the values of our nutritional products, I have always started out with two factors. The first is: Improving your digestion will improve your health, and secondly, I feel it is important to address the topic of acid-alkaline balance.

At that time, I present our Shaklee Alfalfa. The typical diet in our country disrupts the acid-alkaline balance. Meats and grains, (the most frequent choice), are acid forming. We, Americans just do not eat enough veggies or green foods. 16. Healthy Christmas Protein Balls Snack
As we roll into holiday cooking activities, I thought I would share with you a healthy nutritious snack that's fun to prepare with little ones.

The Healthy Christmas Snack Protein Balls

Prep Time: 30 minutes (15 minutes to mix, 15 minutes to roll into balls)

Basic Ingredients:
1 c. Natural Peanut Butter
1 c. Honey
1 c. Shaklee protein powder (cocoa protein powder makes the balls especially yummy) find at www.barefoot-mom.com
Add-In Ingredients (4 cups total, create your own combination!):
Sunflower seeds
Peanuts
Chocolate chips
Granola
Oatmeal
Raisins
Dried cranberries
Oat bran
Wheat germ
Flax seed (ground or whole)

Directions:
Mix together the basic ingredients in a large bowl: peanut butter, honey, and protein powder. Add 4 cups total of the add-in ingredients. (Peanuts, oatmeal, and chocolate chips are a delicious classic.)

The more dry ingredients you add, the stiffer the mixture gets. You want the protein balls to stick together when you roll them, but you donÂ’t want them to be so sticky that they wonÂ’t hold shape. Add more oatmeal, wheat germ, or oat bran if your mixture is too goopy. Add more honey if your mixture is too dry.

Roll the mixture into balls about 1 inch in diameter. This is the tedious part—so get the kids involved! Refrigerate the balls (or freeze any extra). You can stack them in Tupperware and separate the layers with waxed paper.

Here's an idea for you to give your body the benefits of excercise.

Start your day with a 10-minute walk. Then grab three more 10-minute walking breaks throughout the day. Research shows that grabbing 10 minutes here and there could provide you with even better control over your blood pressure than if you'd slogged your way through a single 40-minute treadmill session.

When people with prehypertension -- that's systolic blood pressure of 120-139 or diastolic blood pressure of 80-89, or both -- were asked to walk briskly for 40 continuous minutes or for 10 minutes once per hour over a stretch of 4 hours, their blood pressure benefited most from the accumulated walking stints. The shorter walks reduced people's systolic pressure (that's the upper number) for 11 hours after the accumulated walks compared to only 7 hours for the continuous walk. Their diastolic pressure (the bottom number) was lower for 10 hours after the accumulated activity as opposed to only 7 hours for the continuous activity.

Good news if you're struggling to fit exercise into an already jam-packed day. Just grab a quick walk around the block in the morning, in the office parking lot during lunch, at the grocery store on your way home, and around the block again when you get there. You're done. And your heart is healthier.

19. Barefoot Healthy Living: Healthy Aging

This is a testimony from Jan C.
My husband Jim called today after meeting with his lipid specialist in Minneapolis. Once again his cholesterol numbers have significantly dropped! At the time of his cardiac arrest 20 years ago, his cholesterol was over 400. For years the number gradually went down. Two years ago it was 179 and last year, after a year of being on Vivix, it was 138. That's when his statins were cut in half. Today Jim's total cholesterol is 97.

I spent Thursday night in the ER and was admitted for tests. I thought I might be having a stroke, due to dizziness and also had tightness in my chest.

At 61, I have survived my Dad (who died at 55 after 5 heart attacks). My Mom died at 66 of heart disease and my brother had bypass surgery at 42. Now 65, he has had numerous stents and is on a double dose of Crestor.

I believe that, thanks to taking Shaklee for 33 years, my tests came out normal. My carotid arteries are clear. More tests to come, but 5 years ago, a cardiac angiogram showed CLEAR arteries in my heart, too (at age 56).

21. Barefoot Healthy Living: Do you know what you really want?

Reticular Activating System (RAS) is like a spam filter for your mind. RAS is constantly asking three questions in order to decide what you need to know and be aware of:

  1. Is it my responsibility?
  2. Is it important?
  3. Does it match my version of'the truth'?
The first question and more information about how your RAS works.

The second question the RAS continually asks to determine whether or not it will allow you to be aware of the opportunities around you is: Is it important?

The only way your RAS will know what is important is if you tell it exactly what is important.You must have clear, specific, vivid and measurable goals. Make no mistake. Setting goals is one of the most crucial steps to creating a better or different future than you are currently headed for.

Do you know what you really want?
Have you gotten to this point in your life and noone has asked you what is important to you? Have you ever written down what is most important to you? Many times folks will spend more time planning a one week vacation then they will planning their lives. No wonder they are stuck. No wonder things never seem to get much better. Telling the RAS what is important begins with knowing what it is you want.

Get Specific
If you want to set goals that really affect your behavior and cause change, they must be clear, specific, vivid and measurable. The fifth law of behavior says, "Your self-image can be changed by clear, specific, vivid, emotional experiences and/or repetition, whether real or imagined." For your RAS to open up to opportunities around you, you must tell your subconscious minds exactly what you want, because RAS will settle for anything that works! This means that if our goals are vague, general, or fuzzy the RAS will shut down the minute anything satisfies what you have told it.

For example, suppose your goal is you want "more money". You find a $5 bill lying on the ground and your RAS says, "All right! I met that goal, so I don't need to see any more opportunities in the money arena." You see, the $5 bill is "more money" than you had before. On the other hand, if you specify exactly (measurable) how much more money you want (say, $2500 per month), then your RAS doesn't shut out opportunities until you have reached the specific amount that you want.

What if your goal is "to spend more quality time with my kids?" Any extra time you spend would satisfy that goal so that just an additional two minutes a day would be enough for you to quit looking for and seeing opportunities to spend time with your kids. Better that you set your goal as "I will spend a minimum of 20 minutes each day, with each of my children, engaged in conversation one-on-one with no TV or other distractions in the room" (clear, specific, vivid, measurable!).

It's not a good idea to be like the person that says, "I always wanted to grow up to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific." If you don't know where you are going, you are already there!



22. DO YOU NEED SHAKLEE HERB-LAX? YOU BE THE JUDGE...

It has been known by the natural healing profession for many years, and is recently being validated by the medical physicians, that well over 90% of degenerative disease conditions can be related directly to intestinal stasis — that is, a stagnant, fermenting condition within the bowels and related organs. 1. Did you know that diarrhea is just another form of constipation? Therefore, you can use Herb-Lax to help when you have diarrhea, too, though that seems counter-intuitive. 23. THE MOM FACTOR

At the base of your brain, where all the nerve endings come together to form your spinal cord, there is something about the size of your thumb called the Reticular Formation. This is a real physical, physiological thing. Part of the Reticular Formation is the Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS has one job and one job only. Its job is to filter information; and it is superb at what it does. We are constantly exposed to, and bombarded by so much information, data, stimuli and even opportunities, that if we consciously tried to register it all, process it all and think about it all, we would literally go crazy. We would be in a constant state of "overload". So the RAS (which remember, is VERY good at what it does) constantly filters out "extraneous" and "superfluous" information and data. It's like a "Spam Filter" for your mind.

The crucial question then becomes: How does the RAS determine what it needs to filter out? The RAS is constantly asking three questions in order to decide what you need to know and be aware of:

  • 1. Is it my responsibility?
  • 2. Is it important?
  • 3. Does it match my version of'the truth'?
Whatever information, data or stimuli you are exposed to must satisfy all three questions. It's not the best two out of three. It is not a democracy or majority rules. It must satisfy ALL THREE criteria before the RAS will allow you to be aware of it - that includes any opportunities that you come across. Lets look at the first question the RAS asks to see why you may have blind spots and can't see opportunities that are all around you.

1. "Is it my responsibility"? - Have you ever gone someplace you've never been before, in an unfamiliar part of town, as a passenger in someone else's car? After you got there did you realize that you had absolutely no idea how to find your way home? It has probably happened to most of us. On the other hand, had you driven there yourself, would you have been able to find your way home? More than likely.

Why in the first case were you clueless, but in the second case you noticed the gas station on the corner, the white picket fence, the church steeple and all the other landmarks that would help you find your way out of there? Because, in the second case you knew you were responsible for getting there and back. However, in the first case you knew you weren?t responsible, so your RAS decided you didn't need that information, filtered it out and you never saw the important landmarks that could help you find your way home. The "Mom Factor"

I would like all of you mothers reading this to think back to when your first child was an infant (I'm sure the following was true of all of your children, but think especially of your first child). They were just old enough that they had graduated from the bassinet by your bed to their own crib, in their own room down the hall. The first few weeks do you remember how you would be sound asleep in the middle of the night, and out of a sound sleep, all of the sudden you knew that you had to be down the hall checking on your child. 25. Barefoot Healthy Living: Do cleaning products cause breast cancer?

Women who report greater use of cleaning products may be at higher breast cancer risk than those who say they use them sparingly. Researchers writing in BioMed CentralÂ’s open access journal Environmental Health asked more than 1500 women about their cleaning product usage and found that women who reported using more air fresheners and products for mold and mildew control had a higher incidence of breast cancer.

Julia Brody, from the Silent Spring Institute, USA, worked with a team of researchers to carry out telephone interviews with 787 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 721 comparison women. She said, “Women who reported the highest combined cleaning product use had a doubled risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest reported use. Use of air fresheners and products for mold and mildew control were associated with increased risk. To our knowledge, this is the first published report on cleaning product use and risk of breast cancer.”

The researchers questioned women on product use, beliefs about breast cancer causes, and established and suspected risk factors. They found that cleaning products, air fresheners, and insect repellents were associated with breast cancer, but little association was observed with overall pesticide use.

Women with breast cancer who believed that chemicals and pollutants contribute ‘a lot’ to the risk of developing the condition were more likely to report high product usage. Speaking about this potential bias to the study, Brody said, “When women are diagnosed with breast cancer, they often think about what happened in the past that might have contributed to the disease.

As a result, it may be women with breast cancer more accurately recall their past product use or even over-estimate it. Or, it could also be experience with breast cancerinfluences beliefs about its causes. For example, women diagnosed with breast cancer are less likely to believe heredity contributes ‘a lot’, because most are the first in their family to get the disease.”

In order to avoid possible recall bias, the researchers recommend further study of cleaning products and breast cancer using prospective self-reports and measurements in environmental and biological media.

26. Barefoot Healthy Living: Do you need Herb-Lax?

This site is especially for people who are seeking answers about Shaklee products and business.

It's a fact of the natural healing profession for many years, and is recently being validated by the medical physicians, well over 90% of degenerative disease conditions can be related directly to intestinal stasis meaning, a stagnant, fermenting condition within the bowels and related organs. The above is a quote from AOL. This is news? Or is it news? Today, flashing across your computer screen, often, it sounds as if some company has just discovered nature!

For my past several Years in Shaklee, when I have presented the values of our nutritional products, I have always started out with two factors. The first is: Improving your digestion will improve your health, and secondly, I feel it is important to address the topic of acid-alkaline balance.

Health Benefits
When most of us think about the health benefits of dietary protein, its role in bodybuilding comes to mind and rightly so. No new body tissue can be built without it. However, research also suggests that the intake of high-quality protein in the context of an overall healthful diet may also have positive effects on our body weight and body composition as we age, as well as play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, and osteoporosis.

  • Weight Management: Studies have shown that achieving a healthy weight and maintaining that weight can help add years to your life, and scientists believe that dietary protein may play an important role in weight management. High-protein diets may promote significantly more weight loss compared to lower protein diets because of protein's role in promoting satiety In a fairly recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers studied the effects of increasing dietary protein while maintaining carbohydrate content on weight loss, appetite, calorie intake, and fat mass in a small group of study participants. Initially, participants were instructed to follow a weight-maintaining diet (50% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 35% fat) for two weeks. Then for the following two weeks, they were asked to follow a diet providing the same amount of calories but with 50% of calories coming from carbohydrate, 30% from protein, and 20% from fat. Two weeks later, they were given an ad libitum diet of  50% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 20% fat to follow for an additional 12 weeks. Even though subjects could eat as much food as they wanted in those 12 weeks, they actually reduced their calorie intake by an average of 441 calories per day. They also lost an average of 10.8 pounds in body weight and 8.2 pounds of body fat. 
  • Age-Related Muscle Loss: After about age 40, most adults will lose anywhere between 0.5% and 1% of their skeletal muscle mass each year. And in the early years, this gradual loss may go unnoticed because it might be masked by a concurrent increase in body fat. However, chronic muscle loss?or what is known as sarcopenia?is estimated to affect  about 30% of people over age 60 and may affect more than 50% of those over age 80. Insufficient protein intake in older adults can contribute to a loss of muscle, and although the optimal amount of protein to prevent or offset the progression of sarcopenia has yet to be established, research findings suggest that protein intakes modestly above the present recommended dietary allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (i.e. 1 gram per kilogram of body weight per day or higher) enhance muscle mass in older adults who regularly perform resistance exercise. Protein intake in older adults also appears to have a more beneficial effect when consumed within an hour or so of resistance exercise. Emerging research also suggests that dairy protein, especially whey protein, may minimize sarcopenia because of its high concentration of leucine, an amino acid known to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. For example, findings in older adults suggest that increasing leucine intake may help restore the protein synthesis response to protein-containing meals, which has been shown to diminish with age.
  • Cardiovascular Disease: One concern that has been raised about the trend in high-protein diets for weight loss has been that eating diets high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrate, would harm the heart. However, recent research findings suggest that if done in a healthy way, eating a little more protein, especially vegetable protein, while cutting back on refined carbohydrates may actually benefit the heart. A 20-year prospective study of 82,802 women found that those who ate low-carbohydrate diets high in vegetable sources of fat or protein had a 30% lower risk of heart disease, compared to women who ate high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets. But women who ate low-carbohydrate diets that were high in animal fats or proteins did not have a reduced risk of heart disease.
  • Cancer: There's no good evidence that eating a little protein or a lot of it significantly influences cancer risk. However, eating a lot of red meat (cured and processed meats, in particular) has been linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. There also has been considerable investigation of the potential of soy-protein-containing foods to reduce the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer. In a fairly recent review of studies based on Asian populations, higher soy intake was associated with an overall 29% decreased risk of breast cancer. Despite these positive findings, the relationship between soy foods and breast cancer risk has been controversial because of data gathered from cell culture and animal studies that suggest isoflavones (the plant-estrogen-like compounds in soy foods) stimulate the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells. This has led to questions about the safety of soy consumption in women with a history of breast cancer or women at high risk for the disease. Research continues in this area, but it?s important to point out that several lines of existing evidence suggest that women with breast cancer can safely consume soy. First, human studies have shown that isoflavones do not stimulate breast cell proliferation or increase breast tissue density (two markers of increased cancer risk), and a lack of harmful effects have been noted in several clinical studies examining the impact of soy food intake on the prognosis of breast cancer patients. In one study, neither soy nor isoflavone intake was related to the disease-free survival rate of breast cancer patients over a five-year follow-up period, and in a second study, higher soy intake was associated with a more favorable outcome for both total mortality and disease-specific mortality or relapse during a follow up period of two years. And even better news is that the benefit of soy food intake on survival was more pronounced among women with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. Although these studies are encouraging, breast cancer remains a very serious health condition. Women with a history of breast cancer should seek the advice of their doctor concerning the consumption of soy foods as part of an overall healthful diet.
  • Osteoporosis: Prevention of osteoporosis is a public health priority and among nutritional factors, most attention has focused on the beneficial role of calcium. However, in addition to calcium, many other nutrients are necessary for bone health, including protein. Findings from many, but not all, epidemiological studies point to a beneficial role for dietary protein in bone health. High-protein intakes have been associated with reduced bone loss, high bone-mineral density, and reduced fracture risk in older adults. In a recent trial, increasing protein intake, especially when accompanied by calcium and vitamin D, reduced bone loss, improved muscle strength, and shortened the hospital stay in older patients with hip fractures whose usual intake of dietary protein was low.

    On the other hand, some studies suggest that excessive dietary protein intake may have detrimental effects on bone because of its effect on urinary calcium excretion. This controversy may be explained by other nutrients in food or the source of dietary protein. For example, dietary protein has been shown to exert a positive effect on the skeleton of older adults when calcium intake is adequate, but not when calcium intake is low.

    Because protein exists in close association with other nutrients in the diet, it is important to consider protein?s role in bone health in the context of foods or the overall dietary pattern. A number of studies have demonstrated that intake of milk and other dairy products benefits bone health. Dairy products such as milk are a unique source of protein because their calcium content is high relative to their protein content and they contain other bone-supporting nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins A, D, and K.

How Much Protein Is Enough?  
Although no one-size-fits-all answer exists for that question and research on the topic is still emerging, the current recommended dietary allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for healthy young adults. That comes to about 62 grams of protein a day for a person who weighs 170 pounds. Although growing children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and older adults may need a little more (1.0-1.3 grams per kilogram of body weight), getting the minimum daily requirement of protein is fairly easy. Cereal with milk for breakfast, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch, and a piece of fish with a side of beans for dinner adds up to about 70 grams of protein.

It?s also important to pay attention to what comes along with the protein in your food choices. An eight-ounce broiled porterhouse steak is a great source of complete protein?54 grams worth. But it also delivers 44 grams of fat, 16 of which are saturated. Saturated fats raise blood cholesterol, and high blood cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease. On the other hand, a cup of cooked lentils has 18 grams of protein, but less than one gram of fat.

Vegetable sources of protein, including soy protein beverage mixes, are also an excellent choice and many also provide healthful amounts of other essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The best animal protein choices are fish and poultry. If you are partial to red meat, such as beef, pork, or lamb, stick with the leanest cuts, choose moderate portion sizes, and make it only an occasional part of your diet.

The Healthy Christmas Snack

Protein Balls

Prep Time: 30 minutes (15 minutes to mix, 15 minutes to roll into balls)

Basic Ingredients:
1 c. Natural Peanut Butter
1 c. Honey
1 c. Shaklee protein powder (cocoa protein powder makes the balls especially yummy)

Add-In Ingredients (4 cups total, create your own combination!):
Sunflower seeds
Peanuts
Chocolate chips
Granola
Oatmeal
Raisins
Dried cranberries
Oat bran
Wheat germ
Flax seed (ground or whole)

Directions:
Mix together the basic ingredients in a large bowl: peanut butter, honey, and protein powder. Add 4 cups total of the add-in ingredients. (Peanuts, oatmeal, and chocolate chips are a delicious classic.)

The more dry ingredients you add, the stiffer the mixture gets. You want the protein balls to stick together when you roll them, but you donÂ’t want them to be so sticky that they wonÂ’t hold shape. Add more oatmeal, wheat germ, or oat bran if your mixture is too goopy. Add more honey if your mixture is too dry.

Roll the mixture into balls about 1 inch in diameter. This is the tedious part—so get the kids involved! Refrigerate the balls (or freeze any extra). You can stack them in Tupperware and separate the layers with waxed paper.

I received the following statement (in quotes) about regrets a few days ago and I've read it several times and it has made me think. It's really quite a strong statement about the choices we make as people.

I think one reason I have given this some thought is I can remember some of the early times while building our Shaklee business when I would get frustrated because it just didn't seem to be growing as fast as I wanted it to. All kinds of thoughts would start coming to mind and most of them were negative. Wondering if this Shaklee opportunity would really work for us the way it did for others we heard about and saw at various meetings.

Wonder, doubt, temptation to quit, and most of all frustration. As I think back though, the issue really was about me and not the opportunity. I expected more than my skills could deliver. I had to learn the HOW TO's.......How to prospect effectively....getting appointments....telling the Shaklee story....understanding the compensation plan....I had to develop certain skills.

I'm a competitive guy. Always have been. I loved the competition of athletics and that is what would eventually win over all the frustration and/or doubtful thinking. Every team I was ever on, the coach always talked about fundamentals, working hard and having a great attitude, and above all "you never want to quit."

I was not going to quit. I wanted what the Shaklee opportunity offered and I knew if others could build successfully, so could I. I just refused to live a life of regret.

No one ever fails at building a Shaklee business. But many quit! Many people make decisions based on frustration, doubt, and other negative thoughts. Don't allow it to happen to you. Work hard and develop the skills you need to make Shaklee work for you. If you do I know this....You will never, ever regret hanging in there tough, you'll never, ever regret sticking with it, you'll never regret the effort it takes to develop the skills you need.

My feet are still tapping. Are you ready to go dancing too? Lets be honest.. Nothing is more important than your health. As I shared in my last message to you our mind plays an important role in our health.

A perfect example is a story about Fred who went in for a routine exam. Now Fred is 75 years young and has never been sick a day in his life, but due to constant nagging from his wife who may as well live in the doctors office he went.

When routine blood work came back with a elevated PSA that's when all havoc broke loose. The doctor recommended he go in for a bioposy and his wife insisted too. Unfortunately the local hospital running the test couldn't get Fred in right away.

The earliest possible appointment wasn't for 6 weeks. Fred went home and started worrying what the biopsy would show. He went from an active 75 yr old who was an active gardener, to basically and feeble old man would could barely get up to sit in front of the television. When the day of the biopsy rolled around Fred looked like someone had just handed him a death warrant.

Fortunately Fred came through the biopsy surgery OK, but you could tell he still had the worry deep down of what test results would show. When test came back normal it was like Fred had gotten a new lease on life. He got home put his work clothes on and got busy living life again. I don't know how many folks have gone through what Fred did, but I do know it doesn't have to be like this.

Just recently New England Journal of Medicine concluded that screening for prostate cancer has little or no effect in prolonging menÂ’s lives, and the risks posed by unnecessary treatment may outweigh the benefits of early detection. Imagine that!

In conclusion I encourage you to surround yourself with what makes you happy in life.... Such as this video that makes you feel like dancing too.

Franchise Business: What does a SMART Small Business Entrepreneur Do in a Recession?

You know I LOVE twitter, but over the last week I have seen a sense of panic, mostly because I have been focusing on a target market that isn't currently a small business owner. There is so much education to be done for some of these poor souls or at least they think they are poor because the media tells them how bad it is.

I've got "NEWS" for you just because the media paints a doom and gloom picture it doesn't have to be like that. Let's face it. Doom and gloom sells. Look at 911 how many people (including me) were glued to the TV watching and listening. Remember the year 2000 scare when all electronic data was going to be wiped out? Did it happen? NO... Did some people take advantage of it a make a boat load? YES

It amazes me these predictors are not held accountable for their stupidity when the bad things DONÂ’T come to pass. Sadly, IÂ’ve found that some of the greatest tragedies IÂ’ve seen in my life, like 9/11, Huricane Katrina, and earth quakes, tsunamis, and other disasters were not predicted or prevented in any real way at all.

Any thinking person understands depressions, natural disasters, war, and more... does happen and that is unfortunately a part of life as we know it. But the media doesn’t want you to ‘think’… they want you to be afraid and dependant and turn to them for ‘comfort’ day in and day out (bad, bad idea… they never report ‘good news’). To my knowledge, worrying about such events has not prevented any of them!

Action and imagination solve problems a whole lot better than ‘worrying’.

Napoleon Hill didn’t write, ‘Worry and Grow Rich’, did he?

However, the doomsayers predict doom almost every day it and the media seems eerily cheerful in reporting on anything negative that happens around the world in real time, 24 hours a day year round. What is missing is perspective.

Miracles, recovery, healing, new discoveries, massive profits, enlightenment, giving, growth, birth, beauty and joy are ALSO happening every day around the world.

But youÂ’d never know about it if you rely on the NEWS media for your view of reality.

If you want to profit from these times, let McCain, Obama, the stock market, real estate woes and the nattering ninnies in Congress shuffle papers around to their hearts content. And ignore them. If you have real estate problems or stock troubles, educate yourself on how to best deal with those issues. Tell yourself over and over.. Don’t envy or resent the ‘rich’, join them! The Money is still right under our noses. In fact this "recession" will produce more billionaires than ever before. (Some people are THRILLED to see it coming) Stocks and Real Estate will be bought at rock bottom prices. (Only to be sold for massive profits in a few short years) Advertising for your business will be much cheaper, because there won't be the competition from the nervous nellies.

SMART Small Business Entrepreneurs are...

  • Proactive. We see something coming and we do something about it. We take the bull by the horns.
  • Focus on Sales. Bottomline we are in sales may as well admit it. We focus on Sales, not the "news"

Hi Peggy,
I think Amway is going on 50 years too. Our neighbor is one of the top dogs in Amway, he has built a "retirement" house 2 miles from his "mansion" all within a mile from us.. the "mansion" that includes a conference center is up for sale to the tune of 2.5 million.. so the neighbors say! Everyone wonders who they will get in our little rural community to purchase! I'm thinking possible a business of some kind. It was built on a golf course and is beautiful.

Engles? There are many in our community. Mike Engle I remember from High School. Amber Engle who used to be Amber Rock... I could go on and on..

Barefoot Luxury Vacations: 80/20 Rule Technique

The 80/20 Rule is one of the most helpful of all concepts of time and life management. It is also called the Pareto Principle after its founder, the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who first wrote about it in 1895. Pareto noticed that people in his society seemed to divide naturally into what he called the "vital few," the top 20% in terms of money and influence, and the "trivial many," the bottom 80%.

Pareto later discovered that virtually all economic activity was subject to this his Principle as well. For example, this rule says that 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. 20% of your customers will account for 80% of your sales. 20% of your products or services will account for 80% of your profits. 20% of your tasks will account for 80% of the value of what you do, and so on. This means that if you have a list of ten items to do, two of those items will turn out to be worth as much or more than the other eight items put together.

Here is an interesting discovery. Each of these tasks may take the same amount of time to accomplish. But one or two of those tasks will contribute five or ten times the value as any of the others. Often, one item on a list of ten things that you have to do can be worth more than all the other nine items put together. This task is invariably the one that you should do first.

The most valuable tasks you can do each day are often the hardest and most complex. But the payoff and rewards for completing these tasks efficiently can be tremendous. For this reason, you must adamantly refuse to work on tasks in the bottom 80% while you still have tasks in the top 20% left to be done. Before you begin work, always ask yourself, "Is this task in the top 20% of my activities or in the bottom 80%?"

The hardest part of any important task is getting started on it in the first place. Once you actually begin work on a valuable task, you seem to be naturally motivated to continue. There is a part of your mind that loves to be busy working on significant tasks that can really make a difference. Your job is to feed this part of your mind continually.

Time management is really life management, personal management. It is really taking control over the sequence of events. Time management is control over what you do next. And you are always free to choose the task that you will do next. Your ability to choose between the important and the unimportant is the key determinant of your success in life and work. Effective, productive people discipline themselves to start on the most important task that is before them. They force themselves to eat that frog, whatever it is. As a result, they accomplish vastly more than the average person and are much happier as a result. This should be your way of working as well.

Make a list of all the key goals, activities, projects and responsibilities in your life today. Which of them are, or could be, in the top 10% or 20% of tasks that represent, or could represent, 80% or 90% of your results? Resolve today that you are going to spend more and more of your time working in those few areas that can really make a difference in you life and career, and less and less time on lower value activities.

Techniques for Communication via the Telephone

Do you persuade customers, teammates, bosses or employees via the telephone? Like it or not, you're in telephone sales. Even with all the technology on the the Internet, lots of business still revolves around the phone.

Here are some quick tips for making your point more powerful.

Talk clearly. Use short sentences. Talk loud enough but don't over-modulate the mouthpiece (that's announcer talk for distortion). This can be especially tricky when you're on the cell phone in the car. I use a bluetooth ear piece, making it easy to take notes or ordering information. Word of caution do not try to multi-task, carefully listen to what the other person is saying so you know how to respond.

Here's a technique I discovered from talking to newspaper reporters back in the corporate days. When you're talking with a reporter and you want them to write down particular points but not others, vary your pace. Talk fast through the points you don't feel are important, but slow down and enunciate the important parts you want in print. The same works for selling on the telephone.

Leave the script behind. Instead, jot down a few phrases that remind you of your important points. Ad-lib around these to keep your pitch on track. Fear of the phone can be big hurdle for many online marketers. Educate yourself about the product or service you promote. Become a product of the product. Then selling on the phone becomes like talking to your best friend when you know in your heart what's best for them.
